With emotions free flowing by a moving pre-game ceremony for a long-termcoach and 3 graduating seniors, the (0-7) Maryland Terrapins battled the(1-3) American Eagles at The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, MD.

A near capacity crowd celebrated American University's Emily McVey, who was honored pre-game for her 101st game coached with the Lady Eagles, and Terrapin Seniors Sarah Easterwood, Hilary Schultz and Ashley Weber were presented with gifts from their teammates for their upcoming graduation.

What would ultimately become the second instant classic played between the two teams in two weeks, the game started with a spirited, yet scoreless, first period. Maryland Goalie, Sophomore Magaly Bittner, traded dazzling saves with American Goalie, Sophomore Kristin Garrity, while their teammates engaged in a defensive battle thru 17 minutes.

The Terrapin Seniors finally broke through on the score sheet at 15:38 of period two on a goal by Easterwood, who powered past the Eagles defense and placed a powerful wrist shot into the back of the net. The Terps continued to build on their lead on goals by Sophomore Carolyn Derochers, with a gritty individual effort that was assisted by Schultz with 3:40 left in the second. Easterwood then notched her second of the game, for a 3-0 lead, early in the third.

As the game seemed to be tilted in Maryland's direction, The American Lady Eagles turned it up a notch with Casi Walker scoring a quick response goal just 2 minutes after Maryland increased their lead. Walker added a second goal three minutes later to spark a swift American comeback. The tying goal was scored by Sophomore Antonia Gudnadottir, as she flipped in a rebound with 3:26 left in regulation. The restless crowd could feel that something special would happen as the clock ticked down under 2 minutes.

On an impressive rush up-ice, Easterwood secured a pass from Sophomore Melissa Merritt and notched her 3rd goal of the game with only 1:10 remaining to achieve a Hat-Trick in her final game and give the Terps a 4-3 lead, sending the home team crowd into a frenzy. With their goalie pulled, the American girls pressed intently for the final minute, controlling the Maryland zone, but ultimately unable to get theequalizer, as Schultz secured the win with a slick defensive zone faceoff win during the final seconds.

For the second time in back-to-back games a late game goal is the difference in another thrilling game between UMD and AU. The future looks bright as the teams face-off again at the Verizon Center on 17 January for the third and final time this season in what stands to beanother epic battle.

The Maryland Women's Hockey team lost 10-2 against the University of Pennsylvania Quakers Saturday despite an enormous amount of heart and effort.

However, in the second period the Lady Terps only allowed Pennsylvania two goals, and in the third the Quakers were held to one, making it a much more closely matched game. Coming back after disappointment seemed to be a theme in this game. After the first goal was scored by the Quakers, Liz Labor came right back to score a goal for the Terps. The other goal for Maryland was scored by Caroline Reder. "We had to shake off the nerves in the first period," said Jackie Johnson, "We really got it together and started looking like a team in the second and third periods."

The next game for the Terps will be Friday, October 10 against the University of Delaware Blue Hens. "We think we have it together for Friday against UDel," said Magaly Bittner, "but it'll be a tough one." As always, the Terps will come out fighting, improving with every game.
